I like to sit outside, weather permitting, with a nice view of the marina. Afterwards a long walk along the promenade will work off a few of those calories. A no-frills, smoke-filled pub through and through. Belgian beer flows freely from the taps at this venue located in the Intercontinental City Hotel.
Happy hour, daily 4pm-6pm, offers 25QR on draught beers. I can never get enough of the Belgian meatballs. Lunch is available and Friday sees a Grand Mussel Brunch with all-you-can-eat mussels, beverages, salads and desserts.
Last call for food is at midnight. I like to reserve a window table to watch the sunset over the bay. Some of the best jazz bands in the world make their way through this bar.
Rotating guests are always superb. Outside of peak season, Dominick leads the in-house band. One Saturday every month they hold an free, informal Family Jazz Afternoon, which kids love. JALC has brilliant acoustics and an intimate atmosphere and this is my first choice for a night out in Doha.
It costs QR to get in one drink is included. As with other W Hotels, Wahm sets trends in Doha. Currently, there are private cabanas inside and out, with oriental decor and Arabian-style seating but this will soon give way to a new, open design which will be white, light and airy.

Happy Hour is pm but only on selected beer and wine and a limited snack menu is available. I love eating a juicy steak at Prime, an in-house restaurant on the first floor, before ending the evening in Strata. Small local businesses are few and far between in Qatar.
The start-ups that do manage to get backing from a bank face tough competition from international chains. The speciality coffee kiosk Empty Cup, located in a kiosk near the ice-rink on the first floor of City Center Mall, is bucking the trend. While there, try the local sweet speciality called kunafa.
Karak is to Qatar as tea is to England. It is part of the national identity. Locals agree it is to be consumed multiple times daily and joke that Khaleeji blood is made of tea. Located by the mosque at Katara, many locals drive up to the tea stall, honk the horn and wait to be served in the car. There are two mobile kiosks located near the Katara water front, but these sell only karak and plain chapati.
Champions is the only sports bar in town. Fish and chips are decent but I prefer the nachos. The air is smoky and chilly and service can be quite slow. Take your patience and a sweater. Do note, it may be a sports bar but shorts are not permitted and ID is required.
