Whoever knows and experiences Agape sees that nothing else in this world is of any importance, only loving. They had so much to give — and the world demanded so little — that they were obliged to seek out the deserts and isolated places because love was so great that it transfigured them. They became the hermit saints that we know today.

Yet the Love that Devours makes everything lose its importance: these men live only to be consumed by their love. The argument made by the scholars is that Jesus asked Peter if he had the highest form of love for Him. However, Peter could only say that he had the lower form of love for His Saviour.

Finally, the third time He asked the question using the word for the lower form of love. This showed that Jesus was satisfied if Peter could only love Him with phileo love. This argument is found in H. Ironside's commentary on John and in many others. However, your argument seems to approach the interpretation differently.

Bruce in his commentary on John says concerning the interpretation of the Greek words for love in this passage: "But those who see a difference in force between the two verbs here are not agreed on the nature of the difference. This quotation is important for several reasons.

First, F. Also, he is no supporter of the King James Bible. He has been involved in other modern English translations of the Bible. Third, he points out that the scholars who make the distinction in the Greek to be of major significance do so because of their reliance on classical Greek.

That is, they go to the Greek of Plato, Aristotle, and others and assume the distinctions there to be the same as in the Biblical Greek. This has been shown to cause many errors. Biblical Greek was distinct from Classical Greek in many ways. The biblical usage of a word is the proof for what that word means in the Bible. Those who forget this end up teaching error.

You and many others say that Peter was grieved because Jesus used a different word for love in the third question. However, this puts our intelligence above the plain statement of scripture. If the Bible clearly tells us the cause of something, what makes us think that we are smart enough to find another answer?

Read this verse again:. John He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? The verse clearly says that "Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? This, by itself, proves that Peter saw no significance in the changed word for love. However, there is another very powerful reason that a third asking of the question would grieve Peter.

See Luke [54] Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And Peter said, Man, I am not. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Jesus is giving him his own medicine. Read the following passage:. Matthew [31] Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

Peter states that even though others might be offended, he will "never be offended. I have some questions about them myself. But you can bet your last dollar that I'll be there at the end of the fight. I'll be faithful to the end. You can bank on that!

That is what Jesus has reminded Peter of by asking the question about love the third time. Who are the these? Peter dodges the true point of the question until Jesus asks it the third time and removes all doubt as to His point.

Peter gets it and speaks of his love as a confession and not as a bragging point. He had finally learned the lesson. Agape and Phileo will occasionally be used in distinct ways. However, when they are, the King James Bible clearly makes the distinction--sometimes by context and sometimes by a different translation as when agape is translated as charity for emphasis.

However, they are often of no great significance in the Greek. I love input. I look forward to your comments. I reserve the right to delete comments that are offensive or off-topic. I like to think of them broadly as;. Obviously, all of these loves work together, but only Agape is free from the error of our humanity. Agape is the glue that holds the other loves fast and gives us the wisdom and patience when the other loves fail.

If we make it our goal to always be forgiving and merciful and believe in doing good to all men, and then do it, the other loves will stand, and your life will be full of the rich blessings of Phileo friendships and intimates of the sweetest and loveliest kind.

Think about this. How do we truely love anyone in our lives. True love of all is a matter of the heart. After my marriage ended I fell in love hard… really hard. If Hollywood was right about love, if fairy tales were true, he was without a doubt my one true love. When we were together it was electric. He so inspired Eros in me that all night I would tremble. It was as if every other love was nothing and for the first time I was experiencing true love. Nothing changed that, I never lost those feelings, even after five very stormy years of his abusive, broken, off and on love for me. Eventually he married someone else and I was left processing what on earth happened and how to survive the pain of this unrequited love.

Yet He continues to love and pray for us and seek our good. Christ is the rejected lover. Have no doubts, if anyone knows what you are feeling right now, it is Jesus.

Agape is the high love that sustains Eros. Right now you are in great pain because you long for Eros. You long to share that kind of intimacy with the one you love. People have their own wills and many avoid intimacy. The only true option left is to transform that love into a higher love, Agape. We do that by blessing them, praying for them and setting them free whenever we long for them.

Time and time again, lift them up to God, but not asking to possess them, for you cannot. But what about the desperate craving you feel? What about the deep aching loneliness now that love has gone? You have experienced something, you have tasted love at its best and it is hard to be without it.

I rest in His arms and listen to His heart and He fills my longings. Ask and you shall receive. Read Song of Songs and open your heart to the great Eternal Lover. Let this trial be transformed by love and you will shine again. This is a very deep experience for you. Jesus is the greatest lover of all. This peace you have written inspired and encouraged me alot. Weldone and thank you. You know many people find it difficult to discern between love and Lust. He may bruise us only to later heal us. Look at Hosea. His love for Gods chosen woman and the pain associated with that prepared his heart to understand how God felt about the spiritual adultery of his people. We experience great challenges as Christians, but in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer. Once I was in love with this man. The relationship in that manner could not happen. So I went to our loving Father and ask Him to take the love that I had for this man.

Right away, I said Lord no. He talked to me and told He was going to fix it and with time He made it much easier to deal with it.

I agree with your conclusion. There is a time when we love someone and for some reason it cannot be returned or fulfilled. This is where we decide to continue to love while experiencing a dying to the self life which wants what may not be possible.
