When Anderson started his first model plane business, there wasn't much of a hobby industry in Champaign County. Hobbico and Horizon Hobby are major employers in Champaign, and both companies trace their roots to early enterprises started by Don Anderson and his college buddy, Bruce Holecek. Anderson, 59, of Mahomet has been involved in model aviation for 40 years. He's now senior vice president for product development at Hobbico. Growing up in Paris, Ill. But he didn't really get the aviation bug until he came to the University of Illinois as a mechanical engineering student.

Anderson and Holecek shared a lot of common interests, including golf and model airplanes. Anderson remembers their flying a radio-controlled craft near the Assembly Hall and crashing it in Mount Hope Cemetery.

It requires some degree of patience Anderson stayed with GM two years, but became frustrated with the work. He saw how much interest Holecek's business was drawing from modelers, and Holecek persuaded Anderson to go into the model-distribution business, working with manufacturers and hobby shops. Hobby shops weren't thrilled with Holecek doing business directly with modelers, and when shops saw Great Planes was also based in Champaign, they were leery.

However, after a year and half in business, Great Planes was making a profit and growing. The two companies were combined to form Hobbico. Three years earlier, Anderson had entered the manufacturing business, establishing Great Planes Model Manufacturing. The early years in that business were tough because interest rates were high and the business was highly leveraged.

But when Atkins bought Great Planes Model Distributors, Anderson was able to pay down debt on the manufacturing company. In , Anderson sold the model manufacturing business to Hobbico and became the company's senior vice president the following year. His importance to Hobbico was underscored by a statement from company President Wayne Hemming, who said, "Don's drive for perfection shapes the concept, design, testing and manufacturing of products enjoyed by countless other model enthusiasts.

Anderson is responsible for Hobbico's detailed instruction manuals and reputation for easy assembly, said Pesch, the company's senior manager of sales and support. One of Anderson's general managers at Great Planes in the early s was Rick Stephens, Pesch noted in his nomination form. Stephens went on to form Horizon Hobby after Anderson sold the distribution business. Through the years, Anderson has been active in industry groups and modeler groups.

The model airplane business has changed greatly since its early days, Anderson said. Construction time, which used to take 60 or so hours, is now often reduced to just two or three hours. Today, the sport has a lot of enthusiasts, with the Academy of Model Aeronautics boasting , members.

Contest director Tom Griffith said spectators can expect to see 40 to 50 pilots controlling 70 to 80 planes during the course of the show. The planes range from quarter-scale to 43 percent of full size, and one plane has a foot wingspan, he said.

A public address announcer will explain who is flying, but only up to five planes will be in the air at a time, he said. Although several pilots are expected from Chicago, Indiana and Ohio, 20 to 30 will be from the local area, and "top-notch" pilots from Hobbico and Horizon Hobby may be among them, Griffith said. There will be a raffle for radio-controlled planes and products, and information will be available on how to learn to fly the planes.
